Objective
Matzlfangen is a traditional chase game where the goal is for the catcher ("Matzl") to tag the other players. The rest of the players try to evade the catcher and avoid being tagged.
Game Materials
No materials are needed for this game. You only need a large enough open field to play in.
Setup
- Choose one player to be the Matzl (catcher).
- The rest of the players are the mice.
- All players spread out on the field, with the catcher starting in the middle.
Gameplay
- The game begins when the Matzl shouts "Go!".
- The Matzl tries to tag any one of the mice by touching them with their hand.
- Mice run and dodge to avoid being caught.
- Once a mouse is tagged, they become the new Matzl and now have to catch the other mice.
End of the Game
The game ends after an agreed period or number of rounds, or when players decide to stop playing.
Variations and Strategies
- Tag Rescue: A simple rule addition where a tagged mouse can be "rescued" if another mouse tags them before the next catch.
- Obstacles: To make the game more exciting, obstacles can be set up on the field to add interest to the chase.
- Safe Zones: Certain areas of the field can be designated as safe zones where mice can stay for a short time without being tagged.
Strategy Tip: Mice should stay near other players to quickly be rescued in case of being tagged. The Matzl should try to move unpredictably to surprise the mice.
