Objective
The goal of Häufeln is to remember the sequence of an ever-growing list of items and recount it correctly in your turn. The person who forgets or miscounts the list is eliminated from the game. The last remaining player wins.
Setup
No special setup is needed as no game materials are required. The game can be played anywhere spontaneously.
Gameplay
- Determine the starting player: Choose a starting player randomly or by mutual agreement.
- Name an item: The starting player begins by saying "I'm packing my bag and I'm taking with me: ..." and names an item, e.g., "a hat."
- Continue the list: The next player repeats the entire sentence with the named item and adds another item. For example: "I'm packing my bag and I'm taking with me: a hat and sunglasses."
- Continue around the table: This continues clockwise with each player repeating the complete list of previously named items correctly and adding a new one.
Rules
- Repetition: Each player must repeat the list in the correct order. Mistakes will lead to elimination.
- Adding new items: Each player adds exactly one new item to the list. These should reasonably fit the context of a travel bag, but players often improvise for creative reasons.
- Elimination: If a player gets the order wrong or forgets an item, they are eliminated. The next player must repeat the correct list from the last correct turn.
Strategic Tips
- Memory techniques: Develop memory techniques like creating rhymes or mnemonics to better memorize the sequence.
- Memorable objects: Choose particularly striking or quirky items that might be harder for other players to remember.
- Regulate play speed: Avoid speaking too quickly, as this can make it harder for following players to memorize the order.
