Objective
Moeraki Kemu is an abstract strategy game where players aim to line up a specific number of their marbles in a row to win. Players can also block opponent's stones and employ strategic thinking to achieve victory.
Components
- A board with a square grid.
- A number of marbles in two different colors (one color per player).
- A set of rule cards that grant specific moves or actions during the game.
Setup
- Place the board in the center of the table.
- Each player chooses a color and takes all marbles of that color.
- Shuffle the rule cards and place them face down next to the board.
- Each player draws a specific number of rule cards (typically three).
Gameplay
The game plays in turns, with each turn consisting of a movement phase followed by an action phase.
- Movement Phase:
- A player can move one of their marbles one space in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
-
Marbles cannot jump over other marbles or land on occupied spaces.
-
Action Phase:
- The player may play one of their drawn rule cards to execute additional moves or special actions.
- After playing a card, it is placed on a discard pile, and the player draws a new card from the deck.
Winning the Game
The game ends when a player aligns a predetermined number of their marbles in a straight line on the board (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). This number should be agreed on before the game starts, typically 4 or 5.
Strategies
- Blocking: Attempt to block your opponent's attempts by strategically placing your marbles nearby.
- Effective Use of Rule Cards: Hold onto your rule cards until the most strategic moments.
- Anticipate: Consider potential moves your opponent might make next and plan how to counter them.
Special Features
- As an abstract game, success relies heavily on strategic planning and foresight.
- The rule cards add a level of unpredictability to each game and require players to be flexible.
