Objective of the Game

"Risus" is a role-playing game designed for a free and humorous gameplay experience. The objective of the game is to collaboratively create adventures, portray characters, and tell compelling stories. Fun and creativity are at the forefront.

Game Components

  • Dice (6-sided): Each player requires several 6-sided dice.
  • Character Sheet: A simple sheet of paper to record character stats.
  • Pens

Game Setup

  1. Character Creation:
  2. Each player creates a character with:
    • Clichés: A cliché describes what the character should embody, like "fearless pirate" or "genius detective".
    • Dice Points: Each character has a total of 10 dice points, which can be distributed across different clichés. For example: "Fearless Pirate (4), Genius Detective (3), Tavern Brawler (3)".

Gameplay

  • Stories and Scenarios: One player takes on the role of the Game Master. This person describes the situation and environment and presents players with challenges to overcome.
  • Actions and Rolling Dice: When a player wants to perform an action that can succeed or fail, it is determined by dice rolls.

Dice Mechanics

  • Action with Clichés: If a character tries to perform an action that fits one of their clichés, they roll as many dice as points in that cliché.
  • Success or Failure:
  • The Game Master sets a "Difficulty Level," often between 5 and 30.
  • Players roll the dice corresponding to their cliché.
  • The total number of the rolled pips is compared to the difficulty level. If the number is equal to or higher, the action succeeds; otherwise, it fails.

Example Situation

A player wants to use their "genius detective (3)" to break into a suspect's office and find clues. The Game Master sets the difficulty at 12. The player rolls 3 dice and adds the values. If the result is 12 or higher, the break-in is successful; otherwise, it fails.

Strategic Nuances

  • Creative Clichés: Players should choose creative and humorous clichés to make the game more engaging.
  • Collaboration: It often proves advantageous to work together to overcome more difficult tasks.

Risus thrives on player creativity, group dynamics, and the enjoyment of interaction. Each session can be unique, as it does not have rigid rules but rather frameworks that encourage storytelling.

Have fun playing!
