Everway

Objective

Everway is a narrative role-playing game where players take on the roles of heroes traveling through different spheres to experience adventures and solve problems. The main objective of the game is to develop an engaging and satisfying story through creative problem-solving and deep immersion in the narrative.

Materials

  • Vision Cards: These illustrated cards are central elements in decision-making.
  • Character Sheets: Each player creates a hero with specific abilities and traits.
  • Sphere Cards: Depict different worlds with unique challenges and cultures.
  • A Game Master (GM) who describes the world and guides the story.

Preparation

  1. Character Creation
  2. Choose a hero and draft their background, strengths, weaknesses, and goals.
  3. Allocate points to four main attributes of your hero: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air.

  4. Setting Up the Game World

  5. The GM describes the current sphere and its unique aspects.
  6. Each sphere has specific rules and challenges to overcome.

Gameplay

  • The GM describes scenes and presents situations or challenges to the players.
  • Players narrate how they respond to the challenges:
  • During gameplay, the GM can use Vision Cards to introduce random or fateful elements.
  • For ambiguous decisions, the GM draws a vision card to interpret fate and guide the scene accordingly.

Decision Making

Vision Cards are the central mechanism for decision-making, adding depth through symbolism and interpretation. - In a challenge, the GM draws a Vision Card and interprets its symbols, images, and themes in the context of the situation. - Players can suggest alternative solutions based on the visions.

Strategic Conflicts and Challenges

  • Choosing attributes and their use are crucial:
  • Fire represents power and combat skills.
  • Water represents emotional intelligence and adaptability.
  • Earth reflects resilience and physical strength.
  • Air signifies mental skill and flexibility.

  • Strategic thinking is encouraged by creatively using the possibilities of the Vision Cards to influence the world with the character.

Ending the Game

The game ends when players have achieved their goals or the narrative reaches a conclusion agreed by all. The objective is to experience a fulfilling story, learn more about the characters, and develop creative solutions.

Everway requires players to co-create narratives, think creatively, and immerse themselves in an open, symbol-rich world. It is ideal for groups that enjoy storytelling and a free-form game without fixed outcomes.
