Objective of the Game
The objective of Boule is to place your own balls as close as possible to a smaller target ball, known as the jack (or "cochonnet" in French). The game requires skill and strategy to both displace the opponent's balls and optimally position your own.
Game Components
- One target ball (jack), usually made of wood or plastic
- Six larger balls, usually made of metal, for each player or team (typically three balls per player in a one-on-one game)
- A level, firm playing field, often sand or gravel
Number of Players
- 2 to 6 players
Basic Rules
-
Game Start: Determine the starting team by coin toss or other method. The starting team throws the jack to a distance of 6 to 10 meters.
-
Throwing the Balls: Players take turns throwing their Boule balls, starting with the starting player. After the first throw, teams alternate turns, with the team not closest to the jack throwing.
-
Scoring Points: A round is over when all balls have been thrown. Points are awarded to the team whose balls are closer to the jack than the nearest opponent's ball. One point is scored for each ball closer than the opponent's closest ball.
-
End of the Game: The game ends when one team reaches 13 points.
Strategic Tips
- Placement: Try to position your balls in a way that obstructs the opponent's access to the jack.
- Shooting: If an opponent's ball is closer, you can attempt to shoot it away with a precise throw.
- Adjustment: Pay attention to conditions of the playing surface, as these affect how the balls roll and stop.
Special Rules and Situations
- Incorrect Jack Throws: If the jack is thrown outside the permissible distance, the other team may place it correctly.
- Ball Conflicts: In case of ties in distance to the jack or uncertain distances, a measure is taken to resolve the conflict.
- Time Limits: Some games impose a time limit per round to maintain game flow.
Boule is a social game requiring precision and tactics from players and is perfect for casual outdoor play.
