Objective
The objective of Heaven and Hell is to navigate through a sequence of numbered spaces on the ground, usually drawn with chalk, without losing balance or stepping on the lines. Players must hop through these spaces in a specific order.
Playing Area and Setup
The playing area typically consists of a series of numbered squares, alternating between single and double squares. These are usually drawn on the floor in chalk and the basic layout looks like this:
- [1] - Single space
- [2 | 3] - Double spaces
- [4] - Single space
- [5] - Single space
- [6 | 7] - Double spaces
- [8] - Single space
- Heaven - At the top end
Spaces 2/3 and 6/7 are double spaces where players land with both feet. "Heaven" is the goal and turnaround space.
Player Turns
- Each player throws a small object, such as a stone or a token, onto the first space (space 1).
- Hopping: The player must hop through the spaces on one foot, skipping the space with the object. On double spaces, both feet are used.
- Retrieving the Object: Upon reaching "Heaven," the player turns around, stands on one foot, and picks up the object on the way back.
- The player hops back to the start and throws the object to the next space. The process repeats.
Fault Rules: A player loses their turn and must retry the same number on their next attempt if: - The object lands outside the intended space. - The player steps on a line or loses balance. - The player lands both feet on a single space.
Winning
The game ends when a player has successfully tossed the object onto each space and completed the entire course correctly. The winner is the one who navigates the entire course, including "Heaven," as needed correctly.
Strategic Tips
- Concentration and balance are essential. It is advisable to take your time and not rush through the spaces.
- Good throwing technique is helpful to ensure the object lands accurately in the required spaces.
