Objective of the Game
The Pool is a party game based on the well-known billiard variation. The aim is to be the first one to pocket all your team's objects (either solid balls or stripes) and finally the black 8-ball into one of the six pockets on the pool table.
Setup
- Game Materials: A standard pool table with six pockets, 16 billiard balls (numbered 1 to 15 plus the black 8), and a cue stick.
- Number of Players: Two players or teams.
- Setup: Arrange the balls in a triangle with the 8-ball in the center. One of the back balls should be a stripe and another a solid ball; the apex of the triangle is placed on the foot spot of the table.
Gameplay
-
Break: The game starts with a break shot from one player behind the head string in the kitchen. At least one ball must be pocketed or at least four balls must touch the rails. Scratching (pocketing the cue ball) on the break is a foul.
-
Choosing Category: The first pocketed ball after the break determines the player's category (stripes or solids). If no ball is pocketed, the choice remains open until a ball is pocketed correctly.
-
Turn Alternation: Players alternate turns unless a player successfully pockets one or more of their balls. A turn ends if no ball is pocketed or a foul is committed.
-
Game Rules:
- All ball shots must be called unless obvious. The player must announce the pocket in which the ball will be sunk.
-
At least one ball must hit a cushion or be pocketed during a shot.
-
Fouls: Common fouls include pocketing the cue ball, touching any ball with something other than the cue tip during a shot, or pocketing opponent's balls.
-
Winning the Game: A player wins by being the first to pocket all balls of their category followed by the 8-ball. The 8-ball must be called, and sinking it in an uncalled pocket results in a loss.
Strategic Tips
- Use defensive shots to block your opponent’s view or create tough angles for them.
- Always think about where you want the cue ball to end up (cue ball control).
- Look for combination shots and plan several turns ahead.
These rules and tips provide the foundation for a thrilling game of "The Pool." Since there are various versions, some games might have different rules that should be clarified between players prior to play.
