Objective of the Game
Boule Lyonnaise is a precision game in which the aim is to place metal balls as close as possible to a smaller target ball known as the "jack" or "Cochonnet." It is played outdoors on a sandy or gravel surface.
Number of Players
The game can be played as singles (1 vs. 1), doubles (2 vs. 2), or triples (3 vs. 3).
Game Materials
- Metal Balls: Each ball weighs about 700 to 800 grams.
- Target Ball (Cochonnet): A small wooden ball thrown to mark the target.
Setup
The playing field is usually about 27.5 meters long and 2.5 to 4 meters wide.
Rules of the Game
- Start of the Game:
- A team is chosen to throw the "jack" to mark the target at a distance of 12 to 15 meters.
- Throwing the Balls:
- The same team that threw the Cochonnet begins by throwing one of their boules as close to the target ball as possible.
- The opposing team then throws, trying to get closer to the jack or to knock away the opponent's ball.
- Play continues in turns until all balls have been thrown.
- Scoring:
- After all balls have been thrown, the closest ball to the Cochonnet scores a point for its team. If multiple balls from the same team are closer than any of the opponent's balls, additional points are awarded per ball.
- Winning the Game:
- The game ends when a team scores 13 points.
Strategies and Special Features
- Shooting Technique: Players can knock away opponents' balls to better position their own.
- Placement Techniques: Placing a ball directly behind the Cochonnet often proves successful, making it difficult for opponents to knock it away.
- Terrain Considerations: Sand or gravel can affect the direction or speed of the balls. Recognizing and leveraging these terrain features for strategic advantage can be critical.
