Objective of the Game
The aim of Ball over the Line is to throw the ball over a string or net stretched across the middle of the field to the opposing side. Points are scored by the team that manages to place the ball such that the opposing team cannot return it properly.
Setup
- Playing Field: Depending on the number of players, a sufficiently large playing area is needed. The string or net is stretched in the middle of the field at a height of about one to one and a half meters.
- Teams: Divide players into two teams. Typically, groups of 4 to 8 players per team are suitable depending on the number of total players.
- Equipment: A ball that can be easily thrown and caught is needed. A soft ball like a volleyball works well.
Basic Rules
- Serve: One team begins with the serve by throwing the ball over the string into the opponent’s field.
- Return Play: The opposing team must catch the ball and throw it back over the string without it touching the ground.
- Scoring Points: A point is scored if
- the opposing team fails to catch the ball,
- the ball falls into the opponent's field without being touched, or
- the opposing team throws the ball out without it touching their own team or the net.
- Winner: The team that first reaches an agreed number of points wins the game.
Special Rules and Strategies
- Rotation: After each point, the team may rotate positions to ensure that all players experience different positions and both throwing and catching duties.
- Throw Techniques: Various throwing techniques can be used to make the ball more difficult to catch. Flat throws, high arcing throws, or fast straight throws can be valuable strategies.
- Teamwork: Communication within the team is crucial. Players should coordinate who will catch or throw the next ball to avoid mistakes.
- Field Coverage: Ensure you cover the field well so no area is left unguarded.
