Objective of the Game
Taboo is a communication game where the objective is to guess as many words as possible without using certain forbidden words (Taboo words).
Game Materials
- Taboo Cards: Each card has a word to be guessed at the top and a list of five "Taboo words" that must not be used.
- Timer or Sand Timer: A device to track the time, usually one minute per round.
- Buzzer or Bell: To indicate when a taboo word is used.
- Score pad and pen: To keep track of points.
Number of Players
- Minimum: 4 players (two teams with at least two people)
- Maximum: No strict upper limit, but typically up to 10 players to keep the game fair and engaging.
Setup
- Form two teams with as equal a number of players as possible.
- Decide which team will start.
- One player from the starting team draws a card ensuring his teammates cannot see it.
Gameplay
- The chosen player must explain the word at the top of the card to their teammates without using the taboo words listed.
- The opposing team monitors the card to ensure compliance with the rules.
-
If the player uses a taboo word, the opposing team signals it with the buzzer.
-
Penalties: Each taboo word used results in a point deduction for the team.
- The team has one minute to guess as many words as possible.
- After each round, the teams switch, and the next player from the opposing team takes their turn.
Scoring
- One point for each correctly guessed word within the time.
- Minus one point for each taboo word used.
Winning the Game
The game lasts for a predetermined number of rounds. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Strategic Tips
- Association: Try to use words or concepts that relate to the word being guessed but do not appear in the taboo list.
- Body Language: Sometimes, using non-verbal clues like gestures or facial expressions can be helpful.
- Time Management: Keep an eye on the remaining time and adjust your explanations accordingly. Don’t spend too long on a word your team is not immediately recognizing; move on to the next.
