Objective of the Game
The Dictionary Game is a creative and entertaining social game where players aim to deceive others with plausible but invented definitions in order to earn points. The main objective is to accumulate the most points by convincing other players to vote for your fake definition of an unusual word.
Number of Players
- Minimum: 3 players
- Maximum: Unlimited, but ideally up to 8 players
Materials Needed
- A dictionary
- Paper and pens for each player
Game Setup
- Players sit in a circle. Each player needs a piece of paper and a pen.
- A dictionary is set forth, preferably one with many unknown and unusual words.
Gameplay
- One player is chosen as the Dictionary Holder. This player selects an unknown or particularly unusual word from the dictionary.
- The Dictionary Holder writes down the correct definition of the word on their paper. All other players invent their own definitions, which must appear credible.
- The Dictionary Holder collects all the papers, shuffles them, and reads them aloud one by one, including the correct definition.
- Players write down which definition they believe to be the correct one (they may not vote for their own).
Scoring
- One point is awarded to each player who correctly guesses the true definition.
- If a player votes for a fake definition, the creator of that definition earns a point.
- The Dictionary Holder earns a point if no one guesses the correct definition.
Strategic Tips
- Try to choose a word that no other player knows.
- Invent definitions that sound technical or include specific details to seem more credible.
- Make sure your fake definition does not sound too far-fetched but remains plausible.
End of the Game
The game can be played over a predetermined number of rounds. The player with the most points at the end of all rounds wins the game.
