Objective

Knipsen, sometimes called Wood Knocking, is a simple dexterity game where the aim is to flick game pieces, often bottle caps or small discs, across a table or playing surface to hit certain targets or zones. The goal of the game is to score the most points by flicking the pieces into designated areas or through goals.

Game Components

  • Bottle caps or specially designed flicking stones.
  • A wooden playing surface (a table or floor), ideally with marked zones that have different point values.
  • Optional obstacles or gates (these can be improvised using matchsticks or toothbrush handles).

Game Rules

  1. Setup: Mark different zones or targets on the playing surface that have point values. The point values can vary and should be of increasing difficulty.

  2. Starting Position: Each player chooses a game piece. The pieces are placed at the edge of the playing surface.

  3. Gameplay:

  4. Players take turns flicking their pieces with a finger (usually the thumb) across the playing surface towards the marked zones or through defined goals.
  5. To flick the piece, place your flicking finger behind the piece and quickly snap it forward.

  6. Scoring:

  7. If a piece lands in a zone or passes through a gate, the player earns the corresponding points.
  8. If the piece misses the zone or goal, no points are scored.

  9. Round End: A round concludes once each player has performed a set number of flicks, typically five.

  10. Winner: The player with the most points after a set number of rounds wins the game.

Strategy and Tips

  • Aim for Valuable Zones: Direct your pieces towards higher value zones.
  • Force: Avoid flicking too hard, as the piece might fly off the playing surface and score nothing.
  • Placement: Pay attention to where you place your pieces on the edge to have a better shot line.
  • Navigating Obstacles: Use obstacles to dampen the force or to execute strategic maneuvers.

Knipsen is easy to learn but hard to master, requiring both dexterity and strategy. It's particularly popular among children but can also be enjoyed by adults and makes for a great party game.
