Objective of the Game
The objective of Mikado is to achieve the highest score by skillfully picking up sticks that have different point values without moving others.
Setup
- Gather all the Mikado sticks into a bundle.
- Hold the sticks vertically at one end and release them, allowing them to fall in a random pile on the table.
Game Play
- Start: The youngest player begins the game. Play continues clockwise.
- Picking up Sticks: Players have to pick up one stick of their choice without moving the others.
- If any other stick moves during the attempt, the player’s turn ends immediately.
- The player has to place the stick they were trying to pick back and the next player takes their turn.
- Using the Mikado stick: If a player has already acquired the Mikado stick (often marked blue), they can use it as a tool to assist in moving other sticks or changing their position without direct hand interference.
Scoring
- Mikado (blue stick): 20 points
- Mandarin (orange): 10 points
- Bonzen (green): 5 points
- Samurai (red): 3 points
- Kuli (black): 2 points
Winning
- The game ends when all sticks have been picked up.
- The player with the highest score wins the game.
Strategic Tips
- Caution and Precision: Work slowly and methodically. An impatient attempt can result in more sticks moving, ending your turn prematurely.
- Choice of Sticks: Start with sticks that appear to be free or easy to remove, and plan your strategy for more rewarding moves by observing the pile closely.
