Objective of the Game
Warhammer 40,000 Role-Playing Games are set in the grim, futuristic universe of Warhammer 40,000. Players take on the roles of heroes or anti-heroes and embark on adventures orchestrated by a Game Master (GM). Objectives vary but often include completing missions, solving mysteries, or defeating enemies.
Setup
- Character Creation: Each player creates a character using a rulebook. This involves choosing classes, skills, attributes, and equipment. Careers include Inquisitors, Space Marines, or Psykers among others.
- Game Materials: Typically, rulebooks, character sheets, dice, and possibly miniatures are needed for illustration.
- Game Master (GM): One person takes on the role of GM, who narrates the story, describes the environment, and interprets players’ actions.
Gameplay
- Story Development: The GM describes the setting and environment that characters face, usually done in an open dialogue between GM and players.
- Decisions and Actions: Players decide how their characters react. They may interact with NPCs (non-player characters), engage in combat, conduct investigations, etc.
- Skill Tests: Many actions require dice rolls to determine outcomes. In Warhammer 40k, a common method is using a d100 compared to skill levels and attributes.
- Combat: Battles are conducted in turns. Initiative determines order. Attacks and defenses are resolved through dice rolls modified by character stats and skills.
Features
- Fate Points: Players often have Fate Points allowing them to re-roll dice or improve results.
- Chapters and Campaigns: Games can be one-shots or part of larger campaigns across multiple sessions.
- Experience Points: Successful actions and story progression grant experience points which can be used to enhance characters.
Strategic Considerations
- Teamwork: Cooperation among players is usually required as the challenges can be complex and deadly.
- Resource Management: Managing ammunition, healing supplies, and other resources is critical for survival.
- Risk vs. Reward: Weighing when to be aggressive or when to retreat is often crucial.
