Objective of the Game
Stratego is a two-player board game where each player controls an army of pieces. The main goal of the game is to capture your opponent's flag while protecting your own.
Game Components
- A 10x10 game board
- 40 pieces per player, consisting of various ranked pieces (from Scout to Marshal) and special pieces such as Spies, Miners, Bombs, and a Flag.
Setup
- Each player chooses a color (red or blue) and receives 40 corresponding pieces.
- Players place their pieces face down on the first four rows of their side of the board. The setup is hidden from the opponent.
The Ranks of the Pieces
- Flag
- Bomb
- Spy
- Ranks from 1 (Marshal) to 9 (Scout)
Special Abilities: - The Spy can defeat the Marshal if it attacks. - Only Miners (rank 8) can defuse Bombs.
Game Play
- Players alternate turns. On a player's turn, they may move one piece one space horizontally or vertically. Diagonal moves are not allowed.
- Attacking occurs by moving into an opponent-occupied space. Both pieces are revealed, and the lower rank is removed from the board. If ranks are equal, both are removed.
- Bombs are immovable and can only be defused by Miners.
- A player wins by capturing the opponent’s flag or if the opponent cannot make a legal move.
Strategy Tips
- Defend your Flag well, ideally surrounding it with Bombs and high-ranked pieces.
- Misdirect your opponent by bluffing your piece distribution and rank.
- Use Miners wisely to remove Bombs or threats strategically.
- Protect the Spy as it is vulnerable but crucial against the Marshal.
Special Rules
- A piece cannot move back and forth between two squares to avoid perpetual motion.
- If both players spend more than one round without meaningful piece movements or results, a draw may be declared.
Stratego involves a blend of bluffing, strategy, and tactics, offering a fun and challenging experience for all players.
