group 2 - 12 Deutsch

Objective of the Game

The objective of Viking Chess (Kubb) is to knock over all the opposing team's base Kubbs (wooden blocks) and then the King before the other team does.

Game Components

  • 1 King: A larger wooden block, often marked red.
  • 10 Kubbs: Smaller wooden blocks.
  • 6 Throwing Sticks: Wooden batons.
  • 4 Corner Stakes: To mark the field boundaries.

Setup

  1. Set up a rectangular playing field, about 5 x 8 meters, outdoors.
  2. Place the King in the center of the field.
  3. Arrange five Kubbs on each team's baseline.

Gameplay

  • The game is played by two teams, each consisting of 1 to 6 players.
  • Teams take turns throwing the batons from their baseline to knock over the opponent's Kubbs.
  • Each knocked-over base Kubb is tossed into the opponent's half of the field and placed standing there as a "field Kubb."
  • All field Kubbs must be toppled before knocking down the baseline Kubbs again.

Throwing Rules

  • The throw is always underhand and from below.
  • You may throw from your baseline or, if all field Kubbs are knocked down, from the line of the closest standing field Kubb.

Winning Conditions

  • Once a team has knocked over all of the opponent's field and base Kubbs, they may aim for the King. The team that successfully knocks down the King wins.
  • If the King is knocked over prematurely, the throwing team immediately loses.

Strategy Tips

  • Defense: Well-placed field Kubbs can create obstacles for the opposing team.
  • Throw Angling: Attempt to angle throws so that Kubbs fall into advantageous positions.
  • Target Prioritization: It's strategic to aim for easier field Kubbs first.

Viking Chess is a game that combines skill and strategy and is particularly suited for outdoor play.
