Earthdawn – An Evening of Roleplaying Adventure
Objective of the Game:
In Earthdawn, players assume the roles of heroes in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world called Barsaive. The objective of the game is to develop characters and immerse in storytelling through embarking on adventures, defeating monsters and threats, and shaping the narrative of the world. It promotes creative teamwork, problem-solving, and – above all – enjoying storytelling.
Basic Information:
Game Type: Role-playing game
Game Category: Strategy, cooperative, abstract
Number of Players: At least one game master and two players are recommended, with up to eight players being common.
Preparation Time: Often requires an hour or more, especially for character creation and world preparation by the game master.
Game Materials:
- Rulebook: Contains all rules for creating characters, understanding the setting, and the mechanics.
- Dice: Various types and sizes, including D4, D6, D8, D10, and D12, used to determine the outcomes of actions.
- Character Sheets: For each player character, includes information on abilities, equipment, and magical powers.
- Playing Cards or other Aids: Depending on the group, additional tools may be used.
Gameplay:
-
Character Creation: Each player creates a character from one of the many races and disciplines in the world of Earthdawn. Races can include Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orks, and T'Skrang. Disciplines are equivalent to classes in other games (e.g., Mage, Warrior, Air Sailor).
-
Narrative and Quests: The game master describes the environment and leads the players through the story. The players respond, make decisions, and contribute to the narrative through their actions.
-
Dice System: For many actions, players must roll dice to determine the success of their actions; the rulebook specifies which dice to use. The result determines success or failure.
-
Combat Rounds: Battles are resolved step by step (initiative roll, attack rolls, defense etc.). Players need to develop tactics to defeat opponents and leverage their character's strengths.
-
Character Development: By succeeding in adventures, player characters earn experience points. These are used to improve abilities, gain proficiency in disciplines, and advance in the game world.
Strategic Tips:
- Utilize Group Dynamics: Since Earthdawn is a cooperative game, it’s crucial for players to work together and utilize each character’s strengths.
- Manage Resources: Keep an eye on hit points, spell count, and equipment condition; these can significantly influence the outcome of an adventure.
- Be Creative: The most amazing adventures often result from creative approaches and unorthodox methods to advance the story.
As players navigate through the mythologically rich and magically intriguing world of Barsaive, they create a tapestry of intense storytelling, strategy, and role-playing prowess.
