Objective of the Game

The Pool is a precision game aimed at using a cue stick to pocket billiard balls into the pockets of a billiard table. There are various versions of the game, each with its own objectives, such as pocketing all of one's group of balls before the opponent does.

Setup

Ensure you have a pool table, a cue stick, and a set of billiard balls, usually consisting of 15 numbered object balls and a white cue ball. A commonly played version is "8-Ball."

  • 8-Ball: The table features 15 numbered object balls and a White ball. The balls are initially racked in a triangle with the 8-ball in the center.

Gameplay

  1. Break: A player executes the break shot at the start. This player aims to pocket as many balls as possible.
  2. If the player fails to pocket a ball on the break, the turn passes to the other player.
  3. Pocketing a ball allows the player to continue.
  4. Foul: Pocketing the White ball or knocking it off the table constitutes a foul.

  5. Game Objective: The primary goal is to be the first player to pocket all of their group's balls (either solids or stripes) and, lastly, the 8-ball if playing 8-Ball.

  6. Pocketing and Continuing: As long as a player legally pockets a ball, they retain control of the table and continue shooting.

  7. Combination Shots: Players can pocket balls off another as long as the first ball hit is from their own group.

  8. Winning the Game: In "8-Ball," the winner is the first to legally pocket all their group balls plus the 8-ball.

Important Rules and Nuances

  • Fouls: Various fouls include:

  • Strategies:

  • Cue Ball Positioning: After each shot, aim to leave the cue ball in a position favorable for your next shot.
  • Defensive Play: Sometimes it's strategic to leave the cue ball in a difficult position for your opponent to play.
