Objective
Jeu Provençal, also known as Boule Lyonnaise, is a traditional boules game where two teams compete to throw their boules as close as possible to a smaller target ball, the Cochonnet. The objective is to be the first team to reach a predetermined number of points.
Equipment
- Set of boules (usually made from steel)
- Cochonnet (small wooden ball)
Player Count
The game can be played by 2 to a maximum of 6 players, typically divided into teams. Teams may consist of single players, pairs, or triples.
Playing Area
The game is played on a rectangular sand or gravel pitch, typically around 27.5 meters long and 2.5 to 4 meters wide.
Basic Rules
- Throwing the Cochonnet: A player from the starting team throws the Cochonnet from a designated circle into the playing area. The Cochonnet must land between 12 and 20 meters from the throwing circle.
- Order of Play: The starting team throws the first boule. Teams then take turns throwing, with the team furthest from the Cochonnet continuing to throw until their boule is closer.
- Scoring: At the end of each round, the team scores one point for each boule that is closer to the Cochonnet than the opponent's nearest boule.
- End of Game: The game is played over several rounds until a team reaches the agreed number of points, usually 13.
Strategy
- Placing or Shooting: Players must decide whether to strategically place their boules closer to the Cochonnet or to shoot the opponent's boules away.
- Terrain Utilization: The game requires skill in managing diverse terrains as pitches can vary significantly. Recognizing terrain contours is crucial.
- Focus and Precision: Precise throws are key to gaining and maintaining control in the game.
Jeu Provençal combines strategic thinking with physical skill in a broad, engaging sport that can be played competitively or for leisure.
