Objective of the Game

Heavy Gear is a tactical tabletop wargame where players command specialized war machines, known as "Gears", into battle. The objective depends on the chosen scenario but typically involves capturing territory, defeating opponents, or achieving specific mission goals.

Game Components

  • Gears and other miniatures: Represent the player's units on the board.
  • Game board: The area where the game takes place.
  • Measuring tape: Used for measuring distances and movements.
  • Dice: Generally six-sided dice (D6) to determine random elements.
  • Reference cards: Contain information about each Gear's skills and equipment.

Game Setup

  1. Select a Scenario: Players agree on a scenario dictating victory conditions and starting setups.
  2. Build Armies: Players construct their army based on a point system.
  3. Setup the Battlefield: Place terrain and obstacles on the board according to scenario instructions.
  4. Establish Starting Positions: Position the Gears within designated zones.

Gameplay

  1. Determine Initiative: Players roll dice to decide the order of play for the current round.
  2. Command Phase: Players issue orders to their units, to be executed in the action phase.
  3. Action Phase:
  4. Movement: Each unit can move according to its movement capacity.
  5. Combat: Units can attack enemy units within range. Attack success is based on a dice roll, modified by the unit's weapon skills and the target's cover.
  6. Special Actions: Units might deploy special abilities or tactics if allowed by the scenario.
  7. Resolve Status Effects: After each attack or special action, apply status effects like damage, panic, or bonus conditions.
  8. Round End: Once all players have acted, the round ends. The game proceeds to the next round or concludes if the victory conditions are met.

Winning Conditions

Depending on the scenario, winning conditions may vary. Players might need to control a specific area, complete a hidden task, or eliminate a certain number of enemy units.

Strategic Considerations

  • Utilize Terrain: Position units advantageously in cover to repel attacks or prepare reinforcements.
  • Balanced Composition: A mix of different Gears can increase flexibility and adaptability to opponents' strategies.
  • Movement and Positioning: Timing and positioning can critically impact battle outcomes, making it important to use units smartly in alignment with their strengths and weaknesses.

With its deep strategy and unit customization, Heavy Gear offers a complex and tactical experience appealing to both new players and veterans looking for a rewarding challenge.
