Objective of the Game
The objective of Reversi is to have more discs of your color on the board than your opponent at the end of the game.
Game Materials
- A board with an 8x8 grid
- Two players, each representing a color: Black and White
- 64 two-sided discs, black on one side and white on the other
Setup
- Place the board between the two players.
- Each player chooses a color.
- Place four discs in the center of the board in a 2x2 pattern: The top left and bottom right positions hold one player's color, while the other two positions hold the other color.
Gameplay
- The player with the black discs moves first.
- Players take turns placing one of their discs on the board. Each move must capture at least one of the opponent's discs. This is done by forming a straight line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) of the player's discs with the new disc, with at least one opponent's disc in-between.
Example: - If two black discs have one white disc in-between them (like B-W-B), you can place a black disc on an open side to enclose the white disc and flip it.
-
Captured discs are flipped to the player's color.
-
A valid move is mandatory. If a player cannot make a valid move, they must pass their turn to the other player.
Game End
The game ends when: - Both players cannot make a valid move. - All 64 squares on the board are filled.
The player with the most discs of their color wins the game.
Strategic Tips
- Secure the corners: Discs in the corners cannot be flanked and provide strategic stability.
- Control the edges: Edges are harder to flip and offer more stability.
- Be flexible: Avoid flipping too many discs that provide easy opportunities for your opponent to flip back.
Reversi rewards tactical thinking and the ability to anticipate several moves ahead, as the playing field is dynamic and constantly changing.
