Objective

One Pocket is a strategic billiards game where the main goal is to be the first player to pocket a predetermined number of balls into one of two designated corner pockets.

Number of Players

One Pocket is ideally played by two players.

Setup

The game is played on a standard billiards table with 15 colored balls and a white cue ball. Each player chooses one corner pocket as their target pocket. One of the pockets on each side of the table is assigned to each player.

Basic Rules

  1. Break Shot: The game starts with a break shot, where all 15 balls are racked in a triangle. The break is usually performed by the player selected through a prior process (e.g., coin toss).

  2. Objective During Play: Players try to sink balls into their assigned corner pocket. Each properly pocketed ball counts as a point for the player. The objective is to reach a predetermined score (often 8 points) first.

  3. Fouls: There are several types of fouls:

  4. Mis-pocketing: A ball pocketed in the wrong pocket does not count and the opponent's turn begins.
  5. Scratching: If the cue ball is pocketed, it is a foul; the opponent gets ball-in-hand behind the head string.
  6. No rail-contact: If after a shot no ball or cue ball hits a rail, it is a foul.
  7. Fouls may also cause the player at fault to start from a disadvantaged position in subsequent games.

  8. Combinations and Strategies: Players must think strategically and perhaps block balls into their opponent’s pocket to prevent easy shots.

  9. Allowed Shots: Players may use push-out, safety, and combination shots during their turn to tactically position the balls.

Winning the Game

The first player to reach the set number of points (typically 8) wins the game. Tournaments may consist of multiple rounds to determine an overall winner.

Strategic Considerations

  • Defensive Play: It is often advantageous to set the table so that the opponent does not have easy opportunities to pocket balls.
  • Table Control: Try to position balls so that you have good chances to score in your upcoming turns.
  • Know Your Options: Understand the risk-reward of each ball positioning and keep track of the score situation.

One Pocket is a fascinating game that requires both precision and strategic thinking. Good luck and have fun playing!
