Objective

Breakthrough is an abstract strategy board game for two players. The goal of the game is to be the first player to move one of your pieces to the opponent's back row.

Components

  • An 8x8 board, similar to a chessboard.
  • 16 pieces for each player, in different colors, for example, White and Black.

Setup

  • Each player starts with 16 pieces. They are set up on the first two rows of each player's side, i.e., white pieces on A1 to H2 and black pieces on A7 to H8.

Gameplay

  1. Turn: Players take turns moving, starting with the player with white pieces.
  2. Movement: A piece can only move forward, either straight or diagonally.
  3. Capturing: An opponent's piece is captured by moving diagonally forward to the square occupied by the opponent's piece.

Special Rules

  • A piece can never move backward or sideways.
  • There are no special endgame rules; the only objective is reaching the opposite back row.

Winning the Game

The game immediately ends when a player moves one of their pieces to any square on the opponent’s back row. The player who achieves this wins the game.

Strategic Considerations

  • Purposeful movement of multiple pieces is crucial to prevent being blocked by the opponent.
  • Piece exchanges should be considered carefully to gain strategic advantages.
  • Defense is as important as offense: try to break through the opponent's lines as early as possible without compromising your own positions.

With a simple rule set and diverse strategic options, Breakthrough provides a deep and challenging gaming experience.
