Objective
The Amazons is a strategic board game where two to four players aim to strategically place and move their Amazon figures on the board to control as many territories as possible and block other players.
Components
- A square board with 10x10 squares
- 4 sets of Amazon figures, depending on the number of players (usually 4 per player)
- Fire arrows for blocking squares
Setup
- Each player chooses a color and receives the corresponding Amazon figures.
- The Amazons are placed in the first row on the board. With two players, each takes four rows, with three players each take three, and with four players, each gets the corner squares.
Gameplay
The game is played in rounds, and each round comprises the following steps: 1. Move an Amazon: An Amazon can move like a queen in chess, meaning horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, as long as it does not jump over other Amazon figures or fire arrows. It can move as many spaces as desired.
-
Place a Fire Arrow: After moving an Amazon, the player shoots a fire arrow from the position of the just-moved Amazon. The fire arrow can also land in a straight line from the Amazon (similar to the queen's move) and permanently blocks the hit square.
-
The turn ends, and the next player goes.
Objective and End of the Game
The game ends when no player can make a legal move for their Amazons. The goal is to control as many squares as possible on the board by finally positioning your Amazons such that they can no longer be moved or can not be blocked by others.
Strategic Tips
- Blockade: Try to trap opponent's Amazons early by surrounding them with fire arrows.
- Expansion: Try to control as much territory as early as possible to rely on it in the end.
- Traps: Avoid moving your Amazon to positions where they can be easily blocked. Always think several moves ahead.
The Amazons is a game that features deep strategy and demands great skill and tactical thinking from the players.
