Objective of the Game
In Memoarrr!, the objective is to remember the positions of various cards on the table and to find matching pairs without flipping over a "Volcano Tile." The last player remaining in the game, who does not trigger the volcano, wins the round and receives a treasure card.
Components
The game consists of 25 square cards and 7 treasure cards. Each card shows one of five animals (octopus, parrot, penguin, turtle, walrus) and one of five landscapes (water, sand, rock, ice, jungle).
Setup
- Arrange the playing field: Lay out the 25 cards face down in a 5x5 grid.
- Prepare the treasure cards: Shuffle the treasure cards and form a draw pile.
- Determine the starting player: Choose the first player randomly.
Gameplay
The game proceeds over several rounds, with each round consisting of turns in a sequence.
- First Turn: The starting player chooses any face-down card on the table and flips it over.
- Subsequent Turn: From the second turn on, the active player must reveal a card that matches either the animal or the landscape of the last flipped card.
- Match: If the revealed card matches, the player remains in the game.
-
Mismatch: If the player reveals a card that doesn’t match, they are out of that round.
-
New Round: The next player takes a turn under the same rules. If a player is eliminated, flip back the last matching card.
Special Rules
- Volcano Tile: If a player fails to make a valid choice and triggers a mismatch, they are out of that round.
- Last Player Standing: The last player remaining wins the round and draws a treasure card.
End of the Game
The game concludes when all treasure cards have been allocated. The player with the highest total treasure card value wins the game.
Strategic Considerations
- Memory Exercise: The key to success in Memoarrr! is memorizing the positions of the cards revealed during the round.
- Observation: Carefully watch other players' moves to learn the positions of as many cards as possible.
Tips
- Pay attention to which cards frequently mismatched to avoid unnecessary errors later on.
- At the start, focus on either the animal or the landscape feature to increase accuracy.
