Objective of the Game
Shadowrun is a role-playing game (RPG) set in a dystopian future where players assume the roles of characters known as Shadowrunners. These characters typically undertake dangerous jobs called "runs". The players work together to complete missions successfully and develop their characters.
Game Components
- Character Sheets: Each player receives a character sheet that records their character's attributes, skills, and equipment.
- Six-sided Dice (D6): Most actions require dice rolls to determine success or failure.
- Rulebook: The comprehensive rulebook provides details about the world, rules, and game mechanics.
Game Setup
- Create a Character: Each player creates a character defined by a combination of metatype (e.g., Human, Elf, Dwarf), attributes (e.g., Strength, Agility), skills (e.g., Shooting, Hacking), and equipment.
- Game Master: One player assumes the role of the Game Master (GM), who guides the story, plays NPCs (Non-Player Characters), and moderates the gameplay.
Gameplay
- Story and Setting: The GM describes the game world and scenario introduction that the characters find themselves in.
- Determine Objectives: The group decides on the goals of the current mission or run.
- Plan Actions: Players discuss possible courses of action, crafting plans or improvising during unexpected events.
- Perform Actions: To execute an action, players describe it first. Then, they roll a series of D6 dice, the number determined by the relevant skill. The GM sets the action's difficulty level.
- Success and Failure: A number of "successes," identified by rolling a 5 or 6, need to be achieved to complete the action successfully.
- Edge: Players may use "Edge," a limited resource to improve their chances on rolls, strategically.
- Consequences and Development: Based on the success of actions, the story and the characters evolve. Success in missions can earn characters experience points used to bolster their skills.
Strategic Considerations
- Teamwork: Every character has specialized skills complementing the others. Good communication and cooperation are crucial.
- Using Edge: Use Edge sparingly and strategically, as it can significantly improve odds in critical situations.
- Resource Management: Money and equipment are often scarce. Wise use can be the deciding factor in success or failure.

- Hackers and Deckers: Characters can hack into the Matrix system, which constitutes a whole subgame within the game.
