Objective of the Game
Checkers, also known as Draughts, is a two-player strategy game wherein the main objective is to capture all of the opponent’s pieces or block them so they cannot move.
Game Equipment
- An 8x8 board with alternating dark and light squares (like a chessboard).
- Each player begins with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them, using distinct colors.
Game Setup
- Each player sits on one side of the board and places their 12 pieces on the dark squares of the three rows nearest to them.
Game Rules
- Movement Rules
- Players take turns to move.
-
A regular piece moves diagonally forward one square to an adjacent empty dark square.
-
Capturing
- Players capture opponent’s pieces by jumping diagonally over an adjacent piece to an empty square directly beyond it.
- Multiple jumps or captures are allowed if possible in a single turn.
-
Forced Capture: If a capture is available, the player must make the move.
-
Becoming a King
- A piece becomes a "King" when it reaches the opponent's farthest row.
-
Kings can move and capture both backward and forward diagonally.
-
End of the Game
- The game ends when a player captures all of the opponent's pieces or blocks them so they can’t make a move.
- The winner is the player who can still make moves or who has captured all opponent's pieces.
Strategic Tips
- It is wise to control the center of the board as it provides more move and capture options.
- Keep at least a "guard row" at the end of the board to prevent your opponent from crowning new kings easily.
- Try to make multiple jumps in a single move to capture more opponent pieces.
Special Notes
- "Checkers" can be played with different rules, depending on the region or house rules.
- Make sure to clarify any special rules before you start playing.
