Game Components:
- A square board with 4x4 fields.
- 16 unique pieces. Each piece has four attributes that can be combined in different ways:
- Tall or short
- Round or square
- Light or dark
- Solid or hollow
Setup:
- Decide who will be the starting player.
- Lay all the pieces in the middle of the table.
Gameplay:
- Select a Piece: The first player selects any available piece and hands it over to their opponent.
- Place the Piece: The opponent places this piece on any of the free spaces on the board.
- Select the Next Piece: The player who just placed the piece then selects a new one from the available pieces and gives it to the opponent.
- Proceed Clockwise: These steps continue alternately.
End of the Game and Winning Conditions:
- Call Quarto!: The game ends once a player forms a line, column, or diagonal with four pieces sharing a common attribute. This player shouts "Quarto!" and wins the game.
- Draw: The game can end in a draw if all 16 spaces are filled and no line shares a common attribute.
Strategic Tips:
- Think Ahead: Keep an eye on the potential combinations your opponent can make with the next piece.
- Defensive Moves: Hand over pieces to your opponent that do not easily allow them to achieve
Quarto!
. - Variety in Selection: Vary the attributes of the pieces you give to your opponent to confuse them.
Quarto! is a game of subtle strategy that requires both good pre-planning and some ability to anticipate your opponent's moves.
