Objective
Midgard is a classic pen-and-paper role-playing game where players take on the roles of fictional characters to experience adventures in a fantasy world. The objective of the game varies depending on the adventure and players' decisions. Usually, it involves completing missions, uncovering mysteries, or battling monsters.
Setup
- Game Master (GM): One person acts as the Game Master, guiding the story and controlling the environment, adversaries, and NPCs (non-player characters).
- Player Characters (PCs): Each player creates a character with attributes like strength, dexterity, and special abilities. Character sheets are used to record these details.
- Game Materials: Dice (primarily D20), rulebooks, character sheets, pencils, and optionally miniatures and maps for visualization.
Gameplay
- Adventure Start: The GM sets the scene describing the starting situation and players decide what their characters will do.
- Interaction and Decisions: Players interact with the world, make decisions, and the GM describes the results of these actions.
- Checks and Dice: To determine the outcomes of actions, checks involving various dice are conducted. For instance, an athletics check might be necessary to climb a wall using a D20. Bonuses or penalties are applied based on character traits or situations.
- Combat: Combat proceeds in turns, with players and enemies acting in rounds. Each character uses specific attacks or spells. Success probabilities are primarily determined by dice rolls.
- Experience and Advancement: After an adventure or regular play sessions, characters gain experience points (XP) which can be used to improve skills and acquire new abilities.
Tips and Strategies
- Role-playing: Focus on immersive play. Players should dive into their characters' personalities and motivations.
- Cooperation: Efficient cooperation between players and using their respective strengths can support mission success.
- Creative Problem Solving: Often there isn't just one solution. Players should try different approaches to overcome challenges.
Special Features
- Storytelling Flexibility: With the GM controlling the world, the game can dynamically respond to unexpected player decisions, making each game unique.
- Variety of Possibilities: From epic battles to political intrigue to mystical discoveries, Midgard offers a wide range of adventure experiences.
