Okiya
Objective
Okiya is a strategic two-player game, where players take turns placing tiles to either create a row, column, or diagonal of four of their tiles, or to completely block the opponent’s movement options.
Components
The game consists of: - A game board made up of 4x4 squares. - 16 Geisha tiles in two colors (8 red-yellow and 8 black-white). - 16 Garden cards, randomly placed face-up on the board.
Setup
- Prepare the game board: Arrange the 4x4 grid of Garden cards.
- Distribute tiles: Each player receives 8 Geisha tiles of one color.
- Choose a starting player: Determine randomly who will start.
Gameplay
- Place the first tile: The starting player removes any Garden card and places one of their Geisha tiles on the empty space.
- Determine move options: The next player must place a Geisha tile on a Garden card that shares the same symbol/design as the just removed card.
- There are four designs: Sun, Clouds, Birds, Blossoms.
- Example: If a Blossom card was removed, a card with the Blossom design must be picked next.
- Continue: Players alternate turns following this method.
- Winning the game: A player wins by:
- Forming a row, column, or diagonal of four of their tiles.
- Completely blocking the opponent’s movement so they cannot make a legal move.
Strategic Tips
- Watch positioning: Avoid accidentally allowing your opponent to complete a line.
- Blocking: Use opportunities to deprive your opponent of options while benefiting your strategy.
- Think ahead: Plan multiple turns ahead to control which Garden card might be drawn.
Okiya is a quick yet profound game that challenges strategic thinking at every move.
