Objective of the Game

The goal of the game The Settlers of Catan – Ancient Egypt is to be the first player to achieve a set number of Victory Points, usually 10 points depending on the variant. Points are earned by building Settlements, Cities, and achieving special achievements like the Longest Road or Largest Army.

Game Components

The game includes: - A variable game board consisting of hex tiles representing different resources or the desert - Roads, Settlements, and Cities in four colors - Development Cards - Resource Cards (Clay, Grain, Wood, Ore, Wool) - Two dice - A Robber token

Setting Up the Game

  1. The game board is created by randomly assembling hex tiles.
  2. Number tokens are placed on the resource hexes.
  3. Each player receives roads, settlements, and cities of one color.
  4. Resource Cards are placed next to the board.

Game Flow

Each player takes turns consisting of the following phases:

1. Resource Production

The active player rolls two dice. The sum determines which hexes produce resources. All players with a settlement or city bordering these hexes collect the corresponding resource cards.

  • Robber: If a 7 is rolled, the robber is moved to any resource hex. This hex does not produce resources as long as the robber is there. Additionally, players with more than seven resource cards must discard half.

2. Trading Phase

The active player may trade resources with other players or at a fixed rate (4:1 at the bank, or for better rates at specific harbor locations).

3. Building Phase

The active player can perform the following actions to earn Victory Points: - Build Roads: Costs 1 Clay and 1 Wood - Build Settlements: Costs 1 Clay, 1 Wood, 1 Grain, 1 Wool - Build Cities: Costs 3 Ore and 2 Grain (upgrade a settlement, doubles its yield) - Buy Development Cards: Costs 1 Ore, 1 Wool, and 1 Grain

4. Special Cards

Development Cards can grant bonuses or be used immediately, such as a “Knight” (moves the robber).

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as a player reaches the predetermined number of Victory Points and is declared the winner.

Strategic Tips

  • Planning: Balance resource production from different sources.
  • Interaction: Trading can be crucial to acquire desired resources.
