Objective of the Game

The objective of Fox and Geese is for the Geese to block the Fox, while the Fox attempts to evade the Geese.

Game Materials

Fox and Geese is an asymmetrical board game traditionally played on a 7x9 grid. It requires a special board and pieces, where one piece represents the Fox and the other pieces represent the Geese.

Setup

  • Place the Fox in the center of the board.
  • Position the Geese on the baseline and in the next two rows.

Rules

Basics of Movement

  • Players take turns moving one piece.
  • Geese can be moved one square orthogonally (not diagonally) to an adjacent open space.
  • The Fox can move one square either orthogonally or diagonally.

Fox's Moves

  • The Fox can "capture" a Goose by jumping over it to land on a vacant spot just beyond (similar to checkers).
  • The Fox can make multiple jumps in a single turn if after each jump there is a space to land.

Geese's Goal

  • The Geese aim to immobilize the Fox so that it cannot move. They win by achieving this.

Fox's Goal

  • The Fox wins by either reaching the opposite end of the board or capturing all the Geese.

Strategic Tips

  • The Geese must collaborate to sufficiently cover the board and encircle the Fox.
  • For the Fox, identifying weaknesses in the Geese' defense and conducting targeted attacks is crucial. Patience is key.

End of the Game

The game ends when the Fox either reaches the opposite end of the board, captures all the Geese, or when the Fox has no further moves, resulting in a victory for the Geese.
