Objective of the Game
The objective of Dots is to complete more squares than your opponent. A square is completed when a player draws the last line that forms a 1x1 box.
Game Materials
- Grid of dots (any size, but typically a 6x6 grid)
- Two different colored pens for each player, or alternatively different colored markers
Setting Up the Game
- Draw a grid of dots on a paper. The dots should be evenly spaced to allow easy drawing of lines.
Gameplay
Rounds:
-
Player's Turn: Players take turns drawing a horizontal or vertical line between two adjacent dots. Lines can only connect horizontally or vertically, not diagonally.
-
Completing a Square: If a player draws a line that completes a square, they write their initial inside the square or mark it in some manner to claim it. They then get to draw another line immediately.
-
End of Turn: After drawing lines, check if any squares are completed. If yes, mark them and draw again.
End of the Game:
- The game ends when all possible lines have been drawn and no more moves can be made.
Winner: The player with the most completed/marked squares wins the game.
Strategic Tips
-
Avoid Closing Chains Early: At some point in the game, long chains of boxes will emerge that can be closed. Avoid closing the first box in a chain, as it might allow your opponent to claim the entire chain.
-
Force Your Opponent into Mistakes: Sometimes you can force your opponent into positions where they have no choice but to open chains for you to take advantage of.
-
Plan Ahead: Try to plan as many moves ahead as possible to optimize your turn and leave minimal opportunities for your opponent.
With these rules and tips, you should be ready to play Dots and enjoy developing strategic nuances.
