Objective of the Game

Bauernskat is a variant of the traditional card game Skat, designed for exactly three players. The goal of the game is to collect points by winning tricks and to have more points than the other players by the end.

Materials

  • A deck of 32 cards (the cards 7 to Ace in suits Clubs, Spades, Hearts, and Diamonds).

Setup

  1. Shuffle the cards thoroughly.
  2. Each player receives 10 cards. The remaining 2 cards form the "Skat," placed face down in the center.
  3. Determine a dealer; this role rotates clockwise after each round.

Gameplay

1. Bidding

  • The player to the left of the dealer begins the bidding. In Bauernskat, there are no partners or teams.
  • Bid values are based on the potential win levels and the player's hand.

2. Playing

  1. The player who wins the bidding becomes the solo player against the other two players.
  2. Trump suit is determined during bidding. If no trump is chosen, Jacks are the highest trumps, followed by the cards of the trump suit in the order "Ace, 10, King, Queen, 9, 8, 7".
  3. There is a set number of tricks that must be won to succeed.
  4. Game flow:
  5. The player to the left of the dealer plays the first card.
  6. Players must follow suit if possible.
  7. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play a card of another suit or a trump card.
  8. The player who plays the highest trump or the highest card in the led suit wins the trick and leads the next trick.

3. Scoring

  • Points are counted based on the tricks won and the cards within them.
  • Card values: Ace = 11 points, 10 = 10 points, King = 4 points, Queen = 3 points, Jack = 2 points, other cards = 0 points.
  • The goal is to gather at least 61 points to win the game.

Tips and Strategies

  • Build on strong cards: Focus on recalling high cards and playing them strategically.
  • Conserve trumps: Use trumps strategically to ensure they are available at crucial moments.
  • Recognize opponent patterns: Pay attention to opponents' gameplay to analyze their possible cards.
  • Losing tricks can be beneficial to discard unwanted cards or force the opponents to play their trumps.

Bauernskat requires both luck and skill, and understanding card values and tricks is essential for success.
