Objective of the Game
Lupfen is a traditional card game mainly popular in Southern Baden and Switzerland. The objective of the game is to announce tricks and fulfill these declarations to collect points, ultimately ending with more points than the other players.
Game Materials
- A deck of 36 cards: Cards from 6 to Ace in four suits (Acorns, Leaves, Hearts, Bells, or usually Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds) are used.
- Player list: To keep track of the points.
Number of Players
The game can be played with 3 to 5 players.
Basic Rules

Dealing Cards: Each player receives 5 cards. The remaining cards form the stock (draw pile).

Game Play: The player to the left of the dealer starts. They decide whether to "flip (lupfen)" the game or not. This means they reveal the top card of the stock, and its suit becomes the trump.

Trick Announcements: In each round, the player whose turn it is must announce the number of tricks they believe they can take.

Trump and Suit Following: Once a trump suit is chosen, these are the trump cards. Players must follow suit but can use a trump if they do not have cards of the led suit.

Scoring: The player who takes the most tricks earns points. The precise scoring system can vary according to local rules, and often additional points are given for fulfilling one's announcements.
