Objective of the Game
Risk (also known as Land Abnehmen or "Take the Land") is a strategy game where the objective of each player is to achieve world domination by controlling most of the territories on the board and defeating the armies of their opponents.
Game Setup
- Set Up the Board: The game board represents a map of the world, divided into various territories. Depending on the number of players, position the board to ensure each player can easily access their armies.
- Distribute Territories: Each territory is evenly distributed among players. This can be done randomly or through negotiation.
- Place Armies: Each player receives a certain number of armies (depending on the number of players) and places these initially on their assigned territories.
- Shuffle Action Cards: The game cards, which grant bonuses and additional armies, are shuffled and set aside.
Gameplay
The game is played in rounds. Each round consists of the following phases:
- Reinforcement Phase:
- Each player receives new armies. The number of armies depends on the number of controlled territories. A general rule is: Total number of controlled territories divided by three, rounded down, with a minimum of three.
-
Additional reinforcements are received if a player controls an entire continent or exchanges cards.
-
Attack Phase:
- A player can attack adjacent enemy territories. The attacker can choose how many armies to attack with (at least one army must remain in the origin territory).
- The attack is resolved with dice. The attacker may use up to three dice, the defender up to two dice.
- In combat, the highest dice roll decides. In the event of a tie, the defender wins. The attacker can continue or retreat.
-
If the attacker wins and all defending armies are defeated, they take over the territory and must move at least one army into the newly conquered area.
-
Fortification Phase:
- At the end of their turn, the player may move armies from one territory to another allied territory. The territories must be contiguous.
Winning the Game
The game ends when a player fulfills the mission goal on their mission card (if using mission cards) or when a player controls all territories and thus achieves world domination.
Strategies
- Secure Continents: Focusing on controlling entire continents results in regular reinforcement armies.
- Consider Army Strength: Concentrating high numbers of armies in strategic areas can defend against or initiate attacks.
- Trade Cards: Collect three cards of different symbols or three cards of the same symbol to exchange for additional armies.
Special Notes
- Balance between offense and defense is crucial. Often being too aggressive can lead to becoming overly vulnerable too quickly.
- Alliances can be effective but be prepared for them to break once they are no longer beneficial.
