Objective of the Game

Makruk, also known as traditional Thai chess, is played between two players. The main objective is to achieve checkmate, where the opponent's King (called "Khun" in Thai) is under threat of capture and there is no legal move to escape the threat.

Game Components

  • An 8x8 board, similar to a chessboard
  • Each player has the following pieces:
  • 1 King (Khun)
  • 1 Queen (Met)
  • 2 Bishops (Khon)
  • 2 Knights (Ma)
  • 2 Rooks (Rua)
  • 8 Pawns (Bia)

Initial Setup

The pieces are set up as follows from the player's perspective: - First row (Row 1 for White and Row 8 for Black): Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen (on the King's square), King (on the Queen's square), Bishop, Knight, Rook - Second row: Pawns from A2 to H2 (or A7 to H7 for the opponent)

Movements of Pieces

  • Pawn (Bia): Moves one square forward and captures one square diagonally forward. When it reaches the opponent's back rank, it promotes to a Queen.
  • Rook (Rua): Moves and captures along the ranks or files in a straight line.
  • Knight (Ma): Moves in an "L" shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular.
  • Bishop (Khon): Moves and captures diagonally across the board.
  • Queen (Met): Moves one square in any direction (similar to the King in standard chess).
  • King (Khun): Moves one square in any direction, similar to in standard chess.

Game Rules

  • Turn Order: Players alternate turns, starting with white.
  • Check and Checkmate: It occurs when a player’s King is in check and cannot escape the attack; the King is then checkmated, and the game ends.
  • Draw Rule: If 64 moves occur without any pawn movement or capture, the game is declared a draw.
  • Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opponent's back rank, it is promoted to a Queen.

Strategic Tips

  • Advancing Pawns: Pawns are very valuable in Makruk. Their promotion can significantly alter the game state. Protect them and advance them strategically.
  • Center Control: As in chess, controlling the center is vital. Position your pieces to dominate the board’s center.
  • King Safety: Always be mindful of your King’s safety. Although there are fewer long-range threats, danger is ever-present.
  • Long-term Planning: Makruk rewards strategic foresight and plan-ahead thinking, just like traditional chess.
