Objective of the Game
Carat is a strategy game where players aim to score the most points by strategically placing stones on a grid. The objective is to gain control over specific areas of the board and have the highest points by the end of the game.
Materials
- A square game board with square fields.
- A number of stones in different colors for each player.
- Scoring cards or markers for control areas.
Setup
- Assemble Game Board: Place the board in the center of the table.
- Distribute Stones: Each player receives a set number of stones in their chosen color.
- Place Scoring Markers: Place scoring markers on designated spots on the board, which indicate certain fields or groups of fields and their point values.
Gameplay
-
Rounds: Players take turns in a clockwise manner.
-
Turn Options:
- A player may place one of their stones on an empty field.
-
Once an area is entirely surrounded by stones, control of that area is evaluated.
-
Control Evaluation:
- If a player has the majority of stones surrounding a marked area, that player scores the corresponding points.
- In case of a tie, points are split.
Special Rules
- Blocking: Players can use their turns to prevent others from forming majorities.
- Strategic Placement: Players should be mindful of their stone placements to secure majorities before opponents do.
- Influence of Majorities: In some variants, diagonal connections also count for majorities.
End of the Game
The game ends when all stones have been placed or no more majority evaluations can be made.
Scoring
- Final Points: Sum up the points for controlled areas.
- Winner: The player with the most points wins the game.
Strategic Considerations
- Blocking: Players should not only focus on building their majorities but also actively block opponents by placing stones tactically.
- Flexible Stone Placement: It can be beneficial to place stones that influence multiple areas simultaneously.
