Objective

Bauernschach is a simplified version of chess that only uses pawns as playing pieces. The objective of the game is to capture all of the opponent's pawns or block them so that the opponent cannot make any legal moves. A player wins as soon as one of these conditions is met.

Setup

  1. Game Board: The game is played on a standard 8x8 chessboard.
  2. Initial Pawn Setup: Each player has 8 pawns. These are placed in their respective starting positions on the board: the player with the white pawns places them on their second rank, and the player with the black pawns places them on their second rank.
  3. Equipment: No other pieces are used, only pawns.

Game Rules

  1. Movement: Each pawn can move one square forward. If a pawn is threatened by an opponent's pawn, it may move diagonally one square to capture it.

  2. Capturing: As in regular chess, capturing opposing pawns is only possible diagonally.

  3. Promotion: When a pawn reaches the last row of the opponent, it is promoted to a queen. The promoted queen can move as a normal queen in chess, i.e., any number of squares in any direction (forward, backward, sideways, diagonally).

  4. End of Turn: A turn ends when a pawn has been moved in accordance with the above possibilities.

Strategy and Tips

  • Positioning: Try to position pawns in a way that they mutually protect each other and are buffered from attacks.
  • Diagonal Control: Focus on controlling the diagonal to hamper the progress of enemy pawns.
  • Promotion Advantage: Attempt to promote at least one of your pawns to a queen to apply additional pressure on the opponent's defense.

End of the Game

The game ends when one player has captured all of the opponent's pawns or when the opponent can no longer make any legal moves, meaning all of their pawns are in a blocked position. The player who achieves any of these conditions is the winner of the game.
