Objective of the Game

Schafkopf is a traditional Bavarian card game played with four players. The primary objective of the game is to either win as the solo player against the other three players or in the partnership variant, score more points than the opposing pair.

Game Components

  • 32 cards of a Schafkopf deck, consisting of the cards 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the suits Acorn, Leaves, Hearts, and Bells.

Game Play

  1. Dealing: Each player receives 8 cards. The cards are dealt clockwise.

  2. Bidding: The player to the left of the dealer, known as "Vorhand," begins the bidding round. Possible bids include "Sauspiel," "Solo," "Wenz," "Farbsolo," and "Ramsch":

  3. Sauspiel: The player plays with a secret partner.
  4. Solo: The soloist plays against the other three players.
  5. Wenz: A variant where only the "Unter" cards are trump.
  6. Farbsolo: A suit other than hearts is declared as trump.
  7. Ramsch: No trump suit, and every player plays individually to avoid penalty points.

  8. Gameplay: Players play in a clockwise fashion. The "Vorhand" leads the first trick, and other players must follow suit if possible. If not able to follow suit, a trump or any other card may be played. The highest trump card wins the trick, or if no trump card is played, the highest card of the led suit wins.

  9. Scoring: At the end of a round, points are tallied. Aces are worth 11 points, tens 10 points, kings 4 points, queens 3 points, and jacks 2 points. The player or team who gets more than half (more than 60 points) of the available points wins the game.

Special Rules and Nuances

  • Dodging: Players must not show their cards or reveal them to anyone. Communication about the cards is allowed only through permitted bids.
  • Barrier: Players cannot look at others' cards during the game.
  • Strategies: Concentration is crucial. Remembering which high trumps have been played and which cards might still be in play is important.

Strategy Tips

  • Memory: Try to remember which cards the opponents have already played to better predict what cards are still available to them.
  • Partner Recognition: In Sauspiel, it is important to quickly identify your partner to efficiently cooperate.
