Objective of the Game

Dvonn is a strategic board game in which the aim is to control as many pieces as possible by building stacks and maintaining their connection to red Dvonn pieces. When pieces are disconnected from the red pieces, they are removed from the game.

Components

  • A hexagonal game board with 49 spaces.
  • 23 white pieces, 23 black pieces, and 3 red Dvonn pieces.

Setup

Place the board between the two players. The players decide who will play with the white pieces and who with the black pieces. The 3 Dvonn pieces are placed in the middle of the board.

Gameplay

Placement Phase

Players take turns placing one of their pieces on an empty space on the board. Dvonn pieces can be placed by either player during this phase. This phase ends once all pieces are placed on the board.

Movement Phase

  1. Types of Moves:
  2. A player may move one of their own pieces or a stack they control (top piece is their color).
  3. Each move consists of moving a stack in a straight line (in any of the six directions on the board) exactly as many spaces as the stack is tall.

  4. Moving Rules:

  5. When moving, the stack must fully cross the specified number of spaces.
  6. The stack or piece may land on an empty space or another piece or stack of any color.

  7. Connection Requirement:

  8. All pieces that lose connection to Dvonn pieces are immediately removed from play. A piece or stack is connected if there is an uninterrupted chain of connected pieces or stacks leading to a central Dvonn piece.

  9. Must Move:

  10. The player must make a move if possible. If no legal moves are available, the player must pass until a move becomes possible again.

  11. End of the Game:

  12. The game ends when both players can no longer make any legal moves.
  13. Players count the number of pieces in stacks they control. The player with the most pieces wins the game.

Strategic Considerations

  • Control the Dvonn Pieces: Since they are crucial for maintaining the connection, either control them directly or ensure your stacks remain connected to them.
  • Plan Moves: Predict several moves ahead to build towers that are hard for your opponent to remove.
  • Block Opponent's Moves: Anticipate where your opponent wants to place their pieces and prevent them, forcing them to play suboptimally.

Dvonn is a deep game that requires tactical planning and adapting strategically to your opponent's moves.
