Carcassonne – Over Hill and Dale - Board Game

Strategy, Family Game, Abstract Game

group 2 - 5 Deutsch

Objective

In Carcassonne – Over Hill and Dale, the objective is to score the most points by strategically placing tiles and figures to create paths, markets, fields, and barns, and by collecting fruits and vegetables.

Components

  • Tiles: 73 landscape tiles with various combinations of paths, fields, and buildings.
  • Figures: 32 meeples (8 each in red, blue, yellow, and green) and 8 farmers (one per player).
  • Scoreboard

Setup

  1. Each player chooses a color and takes all the meeples and the farmer in that color.
  2. The scoreboard is placed within easy reach of all players.
  3. The starting tile is placed face-up in the center of the table.
  4. The remaining landscape tiles are shuffled face down to form a draw pile.

Gameplay

The game proceeds in turns, moving clockwise, and each turn involves the following phases:

  1. Tile Draw: The active player draws the top landscape tile from the draw pile.

  2. Tile Placement: The player places the drawn tile onto the existing playing area, following placement rules:

    • Edges of the tiles must match appropriately (paths to paths, fields to fields, etc.).
  3. Deploying Figures: The player can deploy one of their figures onto the tile they just placed as follows:

    • Paths: A figure on a path becomes a Walker. Completed paths score points, with more points for longer paths.
    • Fields: A figure on a field acts as a Gardener. Each completed field scores points for fruits and vegetables.
    • Markets: A figure on a market becomes a Trader. Completed markets score points.
    • Barns: A figure placed on a barn remains there until the end of the game and scores for nearby animals.
  4. Farmer Deployment: Instead of placing a normal figure, the player can place the farmer on a field. Farmers remain in place until game end and score based on their surroundings.

  5. Scoring: If placing a tile completes any structures, involved players score immediately. Figures on completed structures return to the player’s supply.

  6. End Turn: The next player takes their turn.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when all landscape tiles have been placed. Then, a final scoring is conducted:

  • Incomplete paths, fields, and markets are scored.
  • Farmers score points for the fruits and vegetable sections in their influence area.
  • The player with the most points wins the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Plan your figure placement carefully to maximize their scoring potential.
  • Securing fields early can accumulate a lot of points over the course of the game.
  • Be vigilant in blocking opponents from completing their structures.
