Champions (Role-Playing Game)
Objective of the Game:
Champions is a superhero role-playing game where players create their own superheroes and embark on adventures in a world filled with heroes, villains, and supernatural powers. The goal is to cooperatively experience stories, overcome adventures, or successfully complete specific missions.
Preparation
- Character Creation: Each player creates their own superhero. This includes selecting:
- Abilities: Distributing points to define superpowers.
- Equipment and Skills: Choosing from a list of skills and equipment.
-
Background/Character Sheet: Developing a backstory and giving the hero personality.
-
Game Master: One player takes on the role of the Game Master (GM) who guides the story and portrays NPCs (Non-Player Characters).
-
Game Materials:
- A rulebook for Champions
- Character sheets for all players
- Six-sided dice (6D), especially 3D6 for determining checks
Gameplay
1. Role of the Game Master:
The Game Master describes the scenes and conflicts the players will face, such as combat, diplomatic situations, or investigations.
2. Player Actions:
Players declare what their characters want to do. These actions may include attacking, defending, flying, or detective work.
3. Dice Rolls:
Rolls are done using three six-sided dice (3D6):
- Compare the sum to the skill value set for the respective ability.
- A result equal to or less than the value indicates success.
4. Combat System:
- Initiative: Determines the order of actions, often by a comparative roll.
- Attack/Defense: Abilities or powers with specific conditions and effects.
- Damage and Healing: Calculated through chosen powers and attack types, with mechanisms for damage mitigation or recovery.
Strategies
- Coordination: Work with fellow players to overwhelm opponents and boost team efficiency.
- Power Management: Allocate your character points wisely: remember that versatility in skills can sometimes be more useful than sheer firepower.
- Interact with the World: Utilize the environment to gain tactical advantages, or analyze and manipulate situations smartly.
Ending the Game
The story typically concludes when the overarching goal is achieved, such as capturing the villain or averting a crisis. Afterwards, players and the Game Master reflect on the adventure and distribute experience points which may be used to further develop characters.
