Objective of the Game

Croquet is an outdoor game where players use a wooden mallet to hit balls through hoops and around obstacles to accumulate points. The goal is to be the first to pass all the hoops in the set order and finally place the ball at the last station, the "center peg."

Equipment

  • Wooden mallets for each player
  • Wooden balls in different colors for player identification
  • Hoops and pegs set up as obstacles in the field
  • A level playing field or lawn area

Setup

  1. Hoops and a peg are placed on the field according to a pre-determined order. The setup should include both right-angle and diagonal hoops.
  2. Each player selects a ball color and receives a mallet.
  3. The player order is either drawn by lots or pre-arranged.

Basic Rules

  • Players take turns striking their balls through the hoops using a mallet.
  • A ball must pass through the hoops in the specified order. Successfully passing a hoop lets the player take another stroke.
  • If a ball strikes another ball (a "roquet"), the player can place the other player's ball and take an extra shot.
  • If a ball lands out of bounds, it's placed back at the point where it crossed the boundary.

Strategies and Nuances

  • Positioning: Try to position your ball so that you have the maximum opportunity to pass the next hoop in your subsequent turn.
  • Defensive Shots: Use opportunities to nudge opponent's balls into less advantageous positions.
  • Roquet Strategy: Strategically hit other players' balls to gain extra strokes and disrupt their progress.

Winning the Game

A player wins by being the first to successfully guide their ball through all hoops and then striking the center peg correctly.

With these rules in your arsenal, you’re now ready to start your first croquet game!
