Objective
RuneQuest is a pen-and-paper role-playing game where players take on the roles of adventurers in a fantasy world. The objective is to collaboratively experience fantastic stories, complete quests, defeat enemies, and develop the characters over time.
Setup
-
Character Creation: Each player creates a character by establishing attributes like strength, dexterity, and intelligence. Skills, spells, and equipment are also selected. A Game Master (GM) guides the narrative and controls the game world and non-player characters (NPCs).
-
Rulebook: Players and the Game Master should have access to the RuneQuest rulebook, as many decisions and actions are based on the detailed rules therein.
-
Dice: RuneQuest uses a variety of dice, particularly the percentile dice (two ten-sided dice for percentile rolls), to determine the outcomes of actions.
Basic Rules
-
Skill Checks: When a character attempts an uncertain action, the player usually rolls against the character's skill percentage. If the roll result is equal to or less than the skill level, the action succeeds.
-
Combat: Determined through dice rolls and strategic use of skills, equipment, and spells. Armor generally reduces damage.
-
Magic: Characters may cast spells, governed by specific rules in the magic system which involve skill checks and the expenditure of magic points.
Special Features
-
Critical Successes and Fumbles: Certain low or high dice roll results may lead to spectacular successes or critical failures.
-
Realism Factor: RuneQuest emphasizes a realistic feel and a detailed rule system reflecting the complexities of combat and skills.
-
World of Glorantha: The pre-established setting offers a rich mythological world with its own history and cultures, which can be deeply integrated into the characters' adventures.
Strategy
-
Teamwork is crucial; characters with different abilities must collaborate to complete quests.
-
Character Development: Strategic choices in character advancement significantly affect success in ongoing gameplay.
-
Resource Management, particularly managing magic points and equipment efficiently to be prepared for various situations, is crucial.
Ending
RuneQuest has no set ending, as it is an open-ended storytelling game. Campaigns can continue over multiple sessions.
