Objective of the Game
Dōbutsu Shōgi is a simple, strategic board game for two players, inspired by the traditional Japanese chess game Shōgi. The objective of the game is to capture the opponent's Lion or to move your Lion safely to the opponent's back row.
Components
- A 3x4 game board
- 8 pieces (4 per player), depicting the following animals:
- Lion (King)
- Elephant
- Giraffe
- Chick (which can promote to a Hen)
Setup
- Place the game board between the two players.
- Each player places their 4 pieces on the first two rows on their side of the board:
- In the back row (from left to right): Giraffe, Lion, Elephant
- In the front row: Chick
Rules of Play
Movement of Pieces
- Lion: Can move one square in any of the eight directions (horizontal, vertical, diagonal).
- Elephant: Can move one square diagonally.
- Giraffe: Can move one square horizontally or vertically.
- Chick: Can move one square forward. Upon reaching the opponent's back row, it can transform into a Hen.
- Hen: Can move one square in all directions except backward.
Turn Rules
- Players take turns moving one of their pieces.
- When a piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent’s piece, the opponent's piece is captured.
- Captured pieces can be reintroduced into play in future turns.
End of Game
The game ends when: - One player's Lion is captured (in this case, the other player wins). - A Lion reaches the opposite end of the board (this condition results in a win for the player whose Lion achieves this).
Strategic Tips
- Pay attention to safeguarding your Lion, as its capture ends the game.
- Utilize the ability to reintroduce your captured pieces into play to gain strategic advantages.
- Monitor the opponent’s Lion position and block its escape routes.
