Objective

Commands & Colors: Ancients is a strategic board game that allows players to simulate ancient battles by taking the role of generals commanding armies. The objective is to earn a predetermined number of victory points by eliminating enemy units or achieving strategic objectives.

Components

  • Game Board: Divided into hexagonal spaces to represent the battlefield.
  • Unit Blocks: Wooden blocks representing different types of troops (infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots).
  • Cards: Command cards for activating units and Tactic cards for special actions.
  • Terrain Tiles: To represent features such as hills, rivers, or forests on the battlefield.
  • Dice: Special dice used for resolving combat.

Setup

  1. Choose a Scenario: Players select a specific scenario that dictates unit setup, victory conditions, and card distribution.
  2. Set Up the Board: Based on the scenario instructions, the board is arranged with units and terrain features.
  3. Deal the Cards: Each player receives a certain number of command cards as specified by the scenario.

Gameplay

The game is played over several rounds, each consisting of the following phases:

1. Play Command Cards

  • The active player selects a command card from their hand and plays it. The card indicates which sectors of the board (left, center, or right flank) can be activated and how many units in those sectors can be ordered.

2. Move Units

  • Activated units may move across the board based on their type (infantry, cavalry, etc.). The card and terrain can affect their movement capacity.

3. Conduct Combat

  • Activated units in range of enemy units may attack. Combat is resolved by rolling specific dice, with the number and type modified by the unit type and special conditions (e.g., elevation advantage).
  • Hits: Successful strikes require the opponent to retreat or remove blocks from their units.

4. Play Tactic Cards

  • After combat, the active player may use special tactic cards to influence the battle further or gain additional bonuses.

End of the Game

The game ends immediately when a player meets the victory conditions given by the scenario, typically by achieving a certain number of victory points through eliminating enemy units or achieving other objectives.

Strategic Tips

  • Positioning Matters: Ensure your units are strategically placed for maximum battlefield control and flexibility.
  • Card Management: Wisely choose cards to adapt to changing situations or unexpected enemy moves.
  • Utilize Terrain: Terrain obstacles can serve both defensive and offensive strategies effectively.

Commands & Colors: Ancients provides a deep, strategic experience that requires planning, foresight, and timing to lead your army to victory.
