Objective of the Game

Marienbad is a strategic board game for two players, based on the rules of "Nim". The objective of the game is to avoid being the player who takes the last stone from the piles.

Game Components

  • A game board with several rows of stones or other small objects (usually 15 stones in three rows).

How to Play

  1. Setup: The game board is set up with three rows of stones. A possible initial setup might be: Row 1 has 3 stones, Row 2 has 5 stones, Row 3 has 7 stones.

  2. Rules:

  3. Players decide who starts. Then, they alternate turns to make a move.
  4. On each turn, a player must remove at least one stone from one row of their choice.
  5. A player can take multiple stones from the same row but cannot remove stones from more than one row in a single turn.

  6. Goal: The aim is to force the opponent to take the last stone. The player forced to take the last stone loses the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Recognize the Situation: It's crucial to recognize early on if you are in a winning position. Try to create situations where your opponent is forced to equalize the number of stones in each row.

  • Final Moves: Try to position your opponent so that only one row with a single stone remains.

  • Mathematical Parity: Understand the role of parity (even or odd sums of stones in different rows). A proven approach is to enforce parity switches that do not leave your opponent with a beneficial position.

Variations and Special Features

  • Adjusting Difficulty: You can adjust the game's difficulty by varying the number of rows or the size of the rows.
  • Alternative Win Conditions: An alternative rule could be that the person who takes the last stone wins, providing a variation in the game's dynamics.

Marienbad is an easy-to-learn game, whose depth is revealed through strategic thinking and calculations on the number of stones. Enjoy playing!
