Objective
The objective of Make 24 is to use all given numbers in combinations, employing basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to create the number 24 as a result.
Game Materials
- A set of cards or sheets, each with four numbers
- Paper and pen (optional)
Number of Players
The game can be played with a minimum of 2 players. There is no fixed maximum, but depending on group size, it may be beneficial to have multiple games running simultaneously.
Rules of the Game
-
Setup: A card with four random numbers from 1 to 9 is revealed. In some variations, cards with predetermined sets of four numbers are used.
-
Gameplay:
- All players simultaneously attempt to find a combination of the four numbers using the basic arithmetic operations that result in 24.
- Each number may only be used once.
- The operations - addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), and division (/) - can be used freely.
-
Parentheses may be used to specify the order of operations.
-
Objective: The first player to find a correct solution announces it, perhaps by saying "24." The solution is then verified.
-
Scoring:
- If the player’s solution is correct, they score a point.
-
If the solution is incorrect, the other players continue to search for a solution.
-
End of Game:
- The game concludes after a set number of rounds or when a player reaches a certain score.
Strategic Tips
- Prioritization: Begin with multiplication and division, as these operations allow larger strides toward the target number.
- Flexibility: Change the order of numbers and try different combinations.
- Partial Solutions: Use partial solutions by combining two numbers into a new number and then analyze how to use the remaining numbers.
Special Features
- Some variations allow the reuse of numbers or the addition of extra "wild numbers" that can be used to help reach the target.
